"It's just something we know, as soon as we're assembled. Always be there for a human whenever they want a friend to play with." Bomber Bill looked around, nervously. But like I said, The Rules are just something we know. "Don't call me that." Sidney snapped harshly.īomber bill sat up, taking the demolitions helmet off his head and holding it in his lap. It moved! It talked! But celebrations could come later. Sidney suppressed the urge to cheer, to pump his fists at his own correctness. Throwing shadows that almost made it look like.īomber Bill turned his head. Just a minor refracting of light from the window. "And I am going to expect a reply from you very soon." YOU are alive, Bill." Sidney sat back in his chair, crossed his arms. Blinked his eyes, moved his lips, spoke to me clear and clean as any human would. "At the end, Bill, the toy moved his head. Spoke whole, personalized sentences." Sidney leaned closer to Bomber Bill, waiting.

First it talked out of a voice box, like it was just malfunctioning, but then the voice box said my name. I sewed pieces of different toys together, I burned and melted them." No response. Family life wasn't all that great, Dad was an ass, that sort of thing. You see, I was a real hellion when I was a kid. "Bomber Bill, I know you can hear me." Nothing.

Part of him feeling like he was talking to thin air. "Bill." Sidney said, unsure and hesitating. But the he remembered the day in his backyard. Sidney considered swiping Bomber Bill off his desk and into the trash, angry to see nothing after years of work and planning. What was he expecting, a song and dance? An introductory monologue? Nothing but cold immobile plastic greeted him. Sidney set Bomber Bill down, watching the toy lay motionless on his workbench. But Bomber Bill did nothing, He moved as an action figure should, and no more. Waiting for a reaction, a breath of air or a gasp of awakening. Sidney turned the action figure over in his hands, inspecting. And so, with his own two hands, he drew, architectured, molded, and assembled a prototype Bomber Bill action figure. But ultimately, the only way to know for sure, was to make the toy. Everything Sidney could possibly think of had been incorporated. Mass production in it's most capitalistic glory.Įvery variable, every possible source of the life given to toys, had been accounted for. No small-potato assembly lines, no cheaping out on a mom-and-pop operation. Children across the country knew Bomber Bill as their friend, the hero who blows up bad robots and saves the day.Ī function of the materials, energy in the screws or chemicals in the plastic? No way to account for the production processes of every single toy, so Sidney had contracted only the materials suppliers that were the biggest names, who did work for established toy brands. And so Sidney had created Bomber Bill, marketed and spread awareness of the brand.Īre kids responsible for gifting this life? The magic of a child's belief? To account for that, Sidney had designed Bomber Bill with demographics strongly in mind.

How can toys be alive? The question that had haunted Sidney since he was a destructive twelve year old with no greater motivations than fire and punk music.Ĭould they be blessed with life by the power of human collective unconsciousness? Maybe there needed to be a perception in the culture of who this toy is as a person. It was important, for his ultimate goal, that no variable be unaccounted for. He had done some home-learning in basic design principles, to ensure structural integrity.
#TOY STORY 1 SID HOW TO#
Sidney had studied in his spare time how to work AutoCad and 3D Printing. "When is there going to be Bomber Bill toys?!" And every child asked the same question, which Sid always answered with a knowing scheming smile. He had grown his audience, toured conventions where little boys across the country ran up to him to tell him how much they liked Bomber Bill. He had created a successful all-ages comic strip, The Adventures of Bomber Bill. He had done concept sketches during his college years, studying drawing and fine art, developing the skills needed to be an employable cartoonist. It had taken so long, so impossibly long, to get to this point. With a small careful twist, the final screw was tightened.
